BBB Announces Some Tweaks To Its Shakedown Scheme
Recently, the ABC News Program 20/20 exposed the Better Business Bureau's unethical, corrupt and perhaps illegal practices. http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/business-bureau-best-ratings-money-buy/story?id=12123843 20/20 showed three essential money-making schemes the BBB uses to make record profits. Here they are:
(1) The BBB gives more points to a business that gives the BBB more money and thus the business receives a high letter grade;
(2) The BBB erases negative information from a business that gives them money; and
(3) The BBB uses aggressive telemarketing tactics to shakedown money from businesses for a higher letter grade and/or removal of negative information from their ratings page.
Since they implemented the above scheme, we discovered the BBB Atlanta made a 37% increase in revenue in one year That resulted in an additional $500,000 in cold hard cash and compensation of over $121,000 to the BBB Atlanta President Fred Elsberry.
On November 18, 2010, the BBB announced they would stop giving more points to businesses who give them money. However, the failed to announce they were stopping (2) and (3). They did state they were making a "streamlined process" for receiving complaints on their telemarketing sales program but they failed to state they were trashing the shakedown scripts their telemarketers use or the aggressive threatening tactics that have made them so much money. In fact their announcement appears to deny or minimize their liability in this matter.
They did make it clear by their announcement that they were not going to give back the money the removed from the wallets of hardworking businesses during the 2009 Great Recession. Too bad they are a nonprofit and pay no income taxes because Uncle Sam could have used some of that money to pay down the deficit caused by so money businesses not making money.
Clearly, the BBB (Better Business Bureau) is a scam.
